The American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA), a nationwide organization dedicated to fighting Parkinson’s Disease, announced that it is launching its new campaign, titled “Did You Know?”, next month.
Taking place throughout April, Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month, the APDA initiative will look to share key statistics, symptoms and personal stories related to the disease, along with highlighting ways that the public can get involved.
As part of the campaign, the Georgia Chapter of ADPA plans on hosting a number of programs and events to inform local residents and increase engagement.
Planned events include the “Parkinson’s Empowered Symposium” in Atlanta on April 12 and “PD: The Essentials” in Rome on April 26, with both events featuring a panel of experts that will answer attendee questions regarding Parkinson’s Disease.
Additionally, the Georgia Chapter said that it will also share numerous educational content on its social media accounts, using the hashtag #DidYouKnow to help spread awareness.
According to APDA, Parkinson’s Disease affects approximately one million people in the United States (including 32,000 in Georgia), with 90,000 new diagnoses each year.
Amidst those staggering numbers, APDA says that “Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month is the perfect time to shine a spotlight” on the issue.
“With a new diagnosis every six minutes, nearly 7,200 people in this country will learn they have PD in April alone,” said Amy Johnston, executive director of the APDA Georgia Chapter.
“Here in Georgia, we are the boots on the ground. From support groups and exercise classes to educational events and access to PD experts, the APDA Georgia Chapter is here for every member of our local PD community, working tirelessly to help make their journey more positive.”
With so many impacted by the illness, APDA says that public support is crucial towards helping the organization to achieve its goal of finding a cure for PD.
The organization says that people can provide support either by raising awareness about PD or by making a donation on the APDA website.
