The Atlanta Board of Education will appoint a new member to serve the remainder of Eshé Collins’ four-year term after she was elected to the Atlanta City Council.
Orientations for interested candidates will be held Dec. 16 and 17; applications to fill the seat are due by Dec. 20. A community meeting with finalists will be Jan. 6. The new member is expected to be appointed on Jan. 7, according to a prepared statement from the board.
Collins resigned her District 6 seat on the Atlanta Public Schools board after winning the City Council Post 3 At-Large seat in the Dec. 3 runoff. Her resignation from the school board occurred within one year of the next general election, requiring the school board to appoint an interim member to fill the post.
The timeline for the appointment process:
Candidate orientation:
- Dec. 16 and 17 — Mandatory in-person orientation for candidates. Candidates only need to attend one session.
- An initial orientation will be held the morning of Dec. 16, time to be determined.
- An additional orientation will be held the evening of Dec. 17, time to be determined.
- The meetings will be held at APS Offices, 130 Trinity Ave. SW.
Application deadline
- The application link and job description can be found on ABOE homepage.
- All applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Dec. 20.
Application review
- Dec. 20 – Dec. 27: Board members review applications individually.
Selection process
- Dec. 27: Board members will meet to identify finalists.
- Dec. 30 or Jan. 3: Finalists participate in the first round of interviews.
- Jan. 6: Finalists will meet with the public during a community meeting at a location and time to be determined. The board will conduct final interviews of the finalists to select candidates to fill the vacancy.
- Jan. 7: The school board will hold a special called meeting to vote on a candidate to fill the District 6 seat. The new member will be sworn in and participate in the board’s regular meeting the same day.
