Atlanta school board to appoint new member to fill remainder of Collins’ term

The Atlanta Board of Education will appoint a new member to serve the remainder of Eshé Collins’ four-year term after she was elected to the Atlanta City Council.

Orientations for interested candidates will be held Dec. 16 and 17; applications to fill the seat are due by Dec. 20. A community meeting with finalists will be Jan. 6. The new member is expected to be appointed on Jan. 7, according to a prepared statement from the board.

Collins resigned her District 6 seat on the Atlanta Public Schools board after winning the City Council Post 3 At-Large seat in the Dec. 3 runoff. Her resignation from the school board occurred within one year of the next general election, requiring the school board to appoint an interim member to fill the post.

The timeline for the appointment process:

  • An initial orientation will be held the morning of Dec. 16, time to be determined.
  • An additional orientation will be held the evening of Dec. 17, time to be determined.
  • The meetings will be held at APS Offices, 130 Trinity Ave. SW.

  • Dec. 30 or Jan. 3: Finalists participate in the first round of interviews.
  • Jan. 6:  Finalists will meet with the public during a community meeting at a location and time to be determined. The board will conduct final interviews of the finalists to select candidates to fill the vacancy.
