For the past 6 years, Adam Crawford has been steadily building a creative empire in South Downtown Atlanta. Cat Eye Creative is a gallery and exhibition space known for their excellent selection of works by contemporary artists. And now, Crawford is readying to open a new gallery in downtown Decatur.
Last week, I was invited to visit the new Cat Eye Creative location on the ground floor of The Artisan condominium building on Commerce Drive. The 1,000-square-foot space is brightly lit by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the busy sidewalk. On the day that I visited, the bright white walls were practically begging for artwork to be hung. Crawford shared his vision for the space, and his enthusiasm for the community of Decatur as we spoke.
Describing the new location as “much more intimate” and an “evolution” of the gallery’s growth, Crawford was beaming with pride as he welcomed me into the space. It’s the first commercial property that Crawford has ever purchased, but he hints that it will not be the last.
As we discussed the potential for the Decatur location, Crawford highlighted the benefits of being in such a walkable area with so many other restaurants and shops nearby. Until now, Cat Eye Creative’s South Downtown location has more or less limited their reach to those who come, on purpose, specifically to see the gallery. Now in Decatur, there are multitudes of professionals from all walks of life who may stumble upon the gallery and become collectors themselves.
“It’s very much a relationship-based business,” explained Crawford. “You want to get to know your clients and have a place to welcome them that is comfortable.”
Cat Eye Creative’s South Downtown location will still program arts exhibitions through at least October 2025, but development in the area has left its future up in the air. For Crawford, opening an auxiliary location in Decatur is a win-win; it not only diversifies their client base and offers an outlet for viewing great art on the opposite side of town, it also provides a sure bet for the business to continue operations regardless of the changes that may come to its current location on Mitchell Street.
“Everything happens for a reason…” mused Crawford, “gotta trust the process.”
The official Grand Opening of Cat Eye Creative’s Decatur location will take place on Fri., April 4 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Crawford will offer a limited number of spaced-out RSVPs for the day to ensure that everyone has a more personalized experience to view the smaller, more intimate space.
On Sat., April 12, Sean Sweeney’s debut exhibition “Nearsighted” will open at the South Downtown location from 6-10 p.m. Later in the month, Crawford’s curatorial skills will be on full display during “illumine” at Oakland Cemetery from April 17-20 and April 24-27.
Come early May, Cat Eye Creative plans to be involved with the Decatur Arts Festival on the weekend of May 2-5. The following weekend, Sat., May 10, will bring a trio of openings; “Spring Flowers” group exhibition in Decatur, “Summer in the City” group exhibition in South Downtown, and the “In + Out” mural exhibition in Downtown Atlanta.
