Cocktail Thursday: Bye Week Edition

If your Georgia Bulldogs have made it to the last bye week of the 2024 season with their playoff hopes still intact, you probably wouldn’t mind a drink. I can help you with that. Sir Winston Churchill is reputed to have once said that there is no more exhilarating sensation than to be shot at and missed. Georgia Bulldog fans have a good feel for what he was talking about. Kirby Smart’s team dodged a series of calamities over the first seven games of the season, and have emerged in prime position to make a run at an SEC title and a national championship. If you’d told me in the preseason that we’d make it to this point with one close loss and arguably the most impressive victory in the nation on the old resume, I’d have taken it in a blink. I’d have especially taken it if you had told me about how Tennessee, Alabama and Ole Miss have fared to this point. The Red and Black are playing their best football of the season, at a time when their coevals are struggling not to take steps backward. If they can stay healthy and continue to develop, this team might have something. Two weeks ago I never would have believed they had that in them. Now the ‘Dawgs have a weekend off to get healthy and get prepared for the stretch run. It’s certainly a compelling weekend of college football, one in which ranked teams will almost certainly fall to upset. But not ours. No, this weekend is the last big college football weekend of the season during which you face absolutely no peril. So enjoy it, and take it easy. Lazy even. And what’s the cocktail for a lazy Saturday of watching others strive and struggle to stay in contention? A Lazy Saturday. You’ll need: 1 and 1⁄2 oz peach Schnapps 1 and 1⁄2 ounce apple schnapps 5 oz orange juice Add the peach schnapps, apple schapps, and orange juice over ice to fill a highball glass. Garnish with an apple chunk and an orange wedge. Enjoy. And… Go ‘Dawgs!!!
