Legume lovers, rejoice! The Georgia Peanut Commission and Georgia Bankers Association will once again host the 48th annual Georgia Peanut Bank Week throughout the state this month.
Taking place Oct. 21-25, 2024, the five-day event will see Georgia banks and financial institutions honoring the state’s 4,000 peanut farm families and the sustainable efforts they contribute to local and state economies.
The theme of this year’s event is “Hold yourself accountable… Eat Georgia Peanuts,” which looks to highlight peanuts as a nutritious, affordable food option overall.
According to the Georgia Peanut Commission, recent studies have found that regular consumption of peanuts can help reduce the risk of various health issues, including heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s, to name a few.
“We’re excited to continue Georgia Peanut Bank Week for the forty-eighth year and salute peanut farmers and the nutritional benefits of peanuts,” says Joe Boddiford, chairman of the Georgia Peanut Commission. “This promotion is a great way to highlight all peanuts have to offer our communities across the state.”
The timing of the commemorative initiative coincides with Georgia’s peanut harvest, an industry that remains prominent to the state’s agricultural output.
Last year, peanuts were planted on over 770,000 acres throughout the state of Georgia and accounted for more than half (53%) of America’s total peanut production, according to the Georgia Peanut Commission.
For the duration of the event, the Georgia Peanut Commission encourages residents across the state to visit their local participating banks to learn more about the benefits of peanuts.
