The Falcons’ last three games have been pitiful, and there’s been one consistent theme — Kirk Cousins making it really easy for Raheem Morris to turn to Michael Penix Jr.
The veteran signal caller was meant to be the catalyst for a talented yet underachieving offense to realize its full potential. Though there have been glimpses of that happening, Cousins has played like a below-average quarterback more often than not.
And it’s culminated in some pretty pathetic stats over the last three weeks. Kirk Cousins is the first player with 100+ pass attempts, no touchdowns, six or more interceptions, and one or more pick-sixes over a three-game span since Brett Favre.

Kirk Cousins looks slow and weak. Not that he ever looked like the most physically imposing thrower, but it’s worse than I think the Falcons imagined when they handed him a four-year contract in free agency worth $180 million. Over the last three games, Cousins hasn’t thrown a touchdown, thrown six interceptions, and fumbled the ball four times. Despite the poor play from the team’s starter, Raheem Morris isn’t ready to give up on Cousins and turn to Penix just yet.
“We won’t make any excuses for them. That guy has carried us all season, he’s done such a marvelous job. It’s hard to throw that guy under the bus. We’ll bounce back, bring him back and we’ll be ready to go,” Morris said of Kirk Cousins in the Falcons postgame press conference.
While it’s hard to watch Kirk Cousins play like he has over the last three games, the Falcons are still probably better off with the veteran in terms of winning games right now. However, it’s worth arguing that turning to Penix might be better in the long term because, let’s be honest with ourselves: this Falcons team will be lucky to make the postseason, let alone make some noise in the playoffs.
It might be time to have an honest conversation about whether getting Penix experience right now will be best for the Falcons moving forward.
