It’s been predicted for nearly a calendar year by a plethora of MLB insiders that Max Fried will not be returning to the Braves, and recent developments in free agency have all but made that a certainty.
“They haven’t thrown a pitch in more than two months, but their stocks have soared thanks to the contracts given to pitchers whose resumes pale in comparison,” Bob Nightengale writes for USA Today Sports. “When Matthew Boyd receives a 2-year, $29 million contract without throwing more than 79 innings since 2019, when Luis Severino is getting $67 million over three years and Blake Snell is making an average annual salary of $36.4 million, Burnes and Fried should top $200 million.”
The market for starting pitchers right now is bananas, with unproven commodities fetching lucrative multi-year contracts. Max Fried has been the most consistent left-handed starting pitcher on the planet over the last half-decade. Whichever teams lose out on Juan Soto will have cash burning in their pockets, and Fried stands to reap the benefits.
“The only drama is whether Fried goes ahead and signs before Burnes, or lets Burnes set the bar. Fried priced himself out of Atlanta, but is expected to sign with the Yankees or Red Sox. If Soto goes to the Mets, Fried could find himself in a nice bidding war between the Red Sox and Yankees,” Nightengale continues.
It appears there is no reality where Max Fried returns to the Braves, but if we’re looking at things from a glass half full perspective, at least it looks as if he’s destined for the American League, which is a lot better than him signing with a rival like the Mets or Dodgers.
But more importantly, Fried pricing himself out of Atlanta leaves the Braves with a massive hole to fill in their rotation. It’s priority number one for Alex Anthopoulos as Major League Baseball’s winter meetings kick off in Dallas.
