Report: Braves, Orioles targeting Nathan Eovaldi

The one free agent linked to the Braves the most to this point in the offseason has been two-time World Series champion Nathan Eovaldi. It began with MLB.com’s Mark Bowman, who said Eovaldi is at the top of the Braves’ free agency wish list, and most recently, Jon Morosi has reported that both Atlanta and Baltimore are hoping to land his services.

After about of month of radio silence, the hot stove is steaming, particularly when it comes to starting pitchers. The Angels signing Yusei Kikuchi broke the ice, and the biggest move of the offseason came last night, when the Dodgers (of course) inked Blake Snell to a five-year contract worth $182 million.

That’s an absolutely massive contract for Snell, who’s dealt with his fair share of injuries and inconsistencies over the years, which tells us a lot about the starting pitcher market. Max Fried should be looking at a similar kind of contract, and that’s likely to be well out of the Braves comfort zone. They could have to pivot elsewhere, and Eovaldi checks a lot of boxes.

He’s a durable veteran with a track record of success in the postseason, owning a 3.05 ERA over 79.2 October innings. Set to turn 35-years-old soon, he also won’t require a six or seven-year commitment, which could be the determining factor for the Braves, who seem to be aggressively searching the free agent market for answers to their rotation.
