As the offseason progresses, the Braves have yet to make a noteworthy acquisition, leading some Braves fans to revert to the old reliable “Atlanta is cheap” complaint.
Well, with the latest reported payrolls from the Associated Press, we can quash the notion that the Braves are cheap, ranking fourth in payroll at $276 million, with a luxury tax bill of just over $14 million.
Anthopoulos has said that payroll will rise again in 2025 and that he isn’t working with any financial constraints this winter, but that doesn’t satisfy Braves Country. Every free agent target that signs elsewhere or trade that doesn’t involve Atlanta leads to even more winter restlessness.
It’s understandable when you’re watching division rivals spend cash at an alarming rate, but it’s important to remember a few things. Most importantly, this Braves team, even as currently constructed, is still one of the best clubs in baseball.
Secondly, there’s still four months before the start of the season. The Braves aren’t done; in fact, they haven’t even started, regardless of what your ill-informed family members are saying about Liberty Media or Alex Anthopoulos.
Whether it’s a trade or a free agent deal, there will be additions made before Opening Day. Make no mistake about it. Anthopoulos hasn’t lifted a finger this offseason, but that will change in the coming weeks.
