Did you like the movie Forrest Gump? Would you like to find out about “Buster the coal-saving dog”? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then the Savannah History Museum is the place for you!
The Savannah History Museum showcases the city’s history from its founding in 1733 to the present day, and has everything from an interactive component about Native American cultures to a 1902 Crestmobile, a car that pre-dates the Ford Model A. Visitors can learn about the Revolutionary War in Savannah or see Johnny Mercer’s Oscar and Grammy awards. While the kids learn through hands-on play in all kinds of different exhibits, the adults can test their wits in a fast-paced trivia quiz. Complete your visit by relaxing in our Sketch Studio and “drawing” inspiration from the Pulaski Monument.
History
The Savannah History Museum is housed in the old Central of Georgia Railway passenger shed, a National Historic Landmark begun in the 1850s and completed in the 1870s. The railway used the building until 1972. In 1984, a historical attraction called The Great Savannah Exposition opened in the building. The Coastal Heritage Society took over operation of the successor to the Exposition, the Savannah History Museum, in 1990. The museum is now home to more than 10,000 artifacts – one of the largest collections of artifacts in the entire coastal community.
