The Hawks were stuck between a rock and a hard place last offseason. The Dejounte Murray and Trae Young duo had run its course. There was no salvaging the initial trade when Atlanta sent San Antonio a slew of first-round picks for the All-Star point guard, but we have to give credit where credit is due.

Landry Fields may not have gotten the exact value back that Travis Schlenk was forced to trade away for Murray, but the deal with the Pelicans has worked out beautifully for the Hawks.

In exchange for Dejounte Murray, New Orleans has conveyed Dyson Daniels, E.J. Liddell, Larry Nance Jr., Cody Zeller (via sign-and-trade), and two future first-round draft picks. The most notable piece of the deal is Daniels.

Daniels has become a key cog in Atlanta’s young core, establishing himself as one of the NBA’s premier defenders. Over the weekend, he reached a milestone, recording his 350th career steal. This achievement makes him the second-youngest player in NBA history to reach that mark, with only LeBron James doing so at a younger age.

The 22-year-old is the third player since the turn of the century to record more than 200 steals in a single season. For Trae Young’s entire career, the Hawks have been searching for a defensive stopper, and Dyson Daniels has filled that void. His impact on that side of the court cannot be overstated, but it’s his two-way ability that puts the trade over the top.

Averaging a career-high 14.2 points per game on 49.4% shooting from the field, the Hawks’ young star has established himself as one of the better two-way players in the Association. The club still hasn’t recouped all of the capital from the Dejounte Murray trade, but Dyson Daniels has gone a long way in getting the Hawks as close as possible.
