Savannah is a well-planned, walkable city, but seeing the city on foot can pose a challenge for some visitors.
Luckily, there are plenty of transportation options to get you where you need to go. Here’s a breakdown of the best ways to explore Savannah:
Hop-On Hop-Off Trolleys
Want to mix sightseeing with transportation? Savannah’s trolley tours are a fun and flexible option:
- Old Town Trolley Tours operate daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with tours lasting 90 minutes if you ride straight through. Trolleys stop at 15 points of interest, and you can hop on and off as you please every 20 minutes. For more information, click HERE.
Buses
The DOT shuttle makes getting around downtown Savannah simple and cheap! This ADA-accessible service operates Monday through Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on holidays like Memorial Day and Christmas Eve. The shuttle has 20 stops within the Historic District and offers two route options: Downtown and Forsyth Park. DOT service is unavailable on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. You can learn more about the DOT [here].
For wider travel, the Chatham Area Transit (CAT) offers buses connecting Savannah and Chatham County. With 16 routes available, you can ride anywhere for just less than $2 a trip or purchase a seven-day pass for a nominal fee. Be sure to check the schedule for route-specific operating times. Website.
Rideshares
Uber and Lyft are widely available in Savannah, offering a flexible and convenient way to get around. Pricing varies based on distance, time, and demand, so be sure to double-check your fare on the app before confirming your ride.
Taxis
Yellowcab Savannah provides both sedan and minivan services, making it a reliable choice whether you’re traveling solo or with a group. While they don’t offer handicap-accessible vehicles, they can assist with loading a wheelchair into the cab. If you’re traveling to or from the airport and the Historic District, they charge a flat rate, plus for each additional passenger. Bonus for pet owners—Yellowcab is pet-friendly! Website.
Walking
Savannah’s compact layout makes it ideal for walking. It was designed by General James Oglethorpe. Oglethorpe was a member of Parliament and governed the Colony of Georgia from 1732 until 1743. His urban planning concept, the Oglethorpe Plan, features a unique street layout with repeating squares that blend residential blocks, commercial spaces, and small green parks, fostering cohesive, walkable neighborhoods. It makes for a relatively easy way to navigate on foot. But, keep in mind that the iconic cobblestone sidewalks and steep staircases may be difficult for visitors with limited mobility. If you need assistance navigating these areas, you may view Savannah-Chatham Council on Disability Issues’ Guide HERE.
With these options, exploring Savannah has never been easier.
Whether you take a trolley, ride a bus, or enjoy the city on foot, there’s a mode of transport to suit every travel style.
